Android Still Top OS in U.S. Smartphones, Says Nielsen

Android Still Top OS in U.S. Smartphones, Says Nielsen: "
Results of Nielsen’s recent survey regarding smartphones saw Android gaining 3 more percentage points in smartphone OS market share since the last Nielsen survey.

According to Nielsen’s data for June, Android runs on 39% of smartphones in the United States–the currently dominant smartphone operating system, apparently. Apple’s iOS follows at second place with 28% share, and Research in Motion’s Blackberry still at third place with 20% (down by 3% from last survey).

Among Android device manufacturers, HTC takes the largest share with 14%, followed by Motorola (11%), and Samsung (8%). Among all device manufacturers, Apple is lording over all others (with 28% share)–and that’s expected, since no one else produces handsets for iOS except Apple.

Nielsen’s data for June came from its survey involving 20,202 smartphone owners in the United States.

Do these survey results still come as a surprise to you?

Quickoffice Updated To 4.1, Adds Additional Word, Excel and PowerPoint Editing Capabilities

Quickoffice Updated To 4.1, Adds Additional Word, Excel and PowerPoint Editing Capabilities: "

The folks over at Quickoffice Pro have announced that their powerful document editing and creating application has been updated to version 4.1 for devices running Android version 1.6-2.3. A welcomed addition, the application offers several new and functional features for office savvy individuals on the go.

“The Android market continues to be an exciting platform as new devices appear from various handset manufacturers,” said David Halpin, VP of engineering at Quickoffice. “We continue to seek ways to innovate essential features that will enhance, streamline and evolve consumers’ mobile Office experience. Our latest update does just that, building new and exciting capabilities into our comprehensive application.”

Among some of the powerful new features you’ll find with Quickoffice Pro are the ability to view footnotes and end notes in Word documents along with a simple “easy-to-use formula builder enhancement in Excel” In addition, there has been enhanced image rendering and improved speeds for loading documents thanks to the new cached capabilities, saving on memory and providing an overall boost in scrolling capabilities. Furthermore, you’ll now have the ability to undo/redo picture inserts and deletions on the fly. It would seem that one fact still remains, the days of being pinned at the office to your PC are long gone.

Quickpoint offers a new range of editing features, including: undo / redo for picture insertion and deletion; shape background editing; improved bullet rendering; and insert shapes and render vertical text in a presentation. For users who mostly work on Excel spreadsheets, Quickoffice Pro v4.1 features a control redesign, which lets users actively edit inline, selecting and scrolling through different cells, rather that double tapping on different cells to make edits. Combined with the new formula builder that automatically activates when users edit inline and contextual input capabilities, consumers are able to quickly and easily revise cells for a more streamlined Excel editing experience.

Back in May, with the release of Google Docs for Android, I discussed why I thought the application wasn’t ready yet as well as why I left Docs To Go for Quickoffice. As of this day, I still stand by the decision as Quickoffice has a crisp, clean and streamlined UI, it’s easy to use, syncs up with my Google Docs account and it renders beautifully on a tablet. In addition, searching for documents is as good as doing it from Google Docs online itself. If you haven’t given the app a try you can head on over to our popular apps database where you’ll also find a QR code available or you can quickly grab it from the Android Market. Hit the break for the full press release and to check out some more screen shots of the application as well. Read More…

UberMusic Released Into the Android Market – Custom Themes and Widgets Galore

UberMusic Released Into the Android Market – Custom Themes and Widgets Galore: "
This image has no alt text

If you fancy yourself a music aficionado but the current crop of music players for Android just aren’t doin’ it for ya, a new challenger has entered the ring. UberMusic was just released today onto the Android Market and comes to you from the creative force behind Launcher Pro, Federico Carnales. Obviously, Mr. Carnales knows a little something about customizing and this is where UberMusic receives arguably, its biggest feature: themes. Yup, it’s possible to get 3rd party skins from the Market that will allow you to completely transform the whole UI of UberMusic, even adding custom themed widgets and an “uber” nice live wallpaper. So if you have always been into the look of say, the Zune music player (guilty!), you can finally have your cake and eat it too.

UberMusic is available right now in the Android Market for $3.50 and if you’re one of “those types” that doesn’t like paying for their apps or simply can’t because of your region, Mr. Carnales mentioned today via Twitter that a free version of the app could be in the works.

Gmail update brings custom notifications, better sync for battery life, picture options, new actions

Gmail update brings custom notifications, better sync for battery life, picture options, new actions: "

Better syncing, better notification options lead the way

Gmail update

Gmail's just gotten itself a beautiful little update, and the changes are some we've been wanting for some time. In handy bullet form, the changes are:

  • You can choose which mail to sync to help save on battery life. Have a bunch of labels? You can choose which ones to keep synced, and which ones you want to update automatically.
  • For the labels you're keeping synced, you can set custom notifications. That includes whether to receive notifications, which ringtone you want to use for which label, whether to vibrate when a label gets an e-mail, and if you want it to only notify you on the first new e-mail.
  • Know how if there's an image embedded in an e-mail, you must tell it to display the image -- on each and every single e-mail? That "feature" has blessedly been changed so that you can tell it to always display images from a particular sender -- just like in desktop gmail.
  • There's "new options for message options." When you go to the settings area of gmail -- and notice it's been split into "general preferences" along with individual account preferences -- you'll see "Message actions." You can choose to always show them, or show only in portrait, or only in landscape. Nice.
  • Plus, "performance enhancements."

There you have it. Pretty big improvements, if you ask us. Update your app now and give it a whirl, or check out a few more screen shots after the break.

Limit Your Call is perfect for prepaid Android users

Limit Your Call is perfect for prepaid Android users: "

Prepaid isn’t what it used to be. Back in the mid-2000s it was mainly a means for the credit-deprived to get cell phone service. Since then it has evolved into a low-cost alternative to postpaid cellular service. Many carriers are even starting to add smartphones, including Android handsets. There are many limitations on prepaid that you don’t have on postpaid. One of them involves voice minutes. If you go over your minutes on postpaid you might have to pay overages, but on prepaid you’re cut off. That’s why an app such as Limit Your Calls is so essential for any prepaid Android user.

The app can keep your call times in check in a number of ways. You can receive notifications at certain intervals, until you’ve reached your limit. Once you’ve reached that limit, you can keep going, with the knowledge that you need to end the call ASAP, or you can just have the app hang up. I kind of find this hilarious. Just mid-conversation, boom, the call ends. But hey, it will make sure that you have enough minutes to get you through the month, or however long it is before you have to add minutes again.

If you’re a prepaid Android user who doesn’t have an unlimited plan, or even if you’re a postpaid user who wants to avoid overages, you can get Limit Your call from the Market for free.

The company reported it on Tuesday. Mozilla says the idea is to create a fully web-based Operating System which can serve as a definitive tool for developers of web apps.

Dr. Andrea Gal, one of the researchers behind the project, said that the proposed operating system is to fill the space that prevents developers create web applications that are as good as the native IOS or to Android, for example.

The site “The Register” also says that the cloud computing project is still far to complete, but the proposal is very solid and Mozilla have good hope that works out.

It was just a minute ago when I saw the update on Google Search. I was searching something and suddenly, I noticed the new icon added beside search results.

It wasn’t the ordinary Google +1 Icon and nor the Google Preview Icon. The new icon is like a butterfly with some numerical in the middle of it. The icon is meant to show PR of pages.

Now we don’t have to wait for 6 months or some non-definite age to know the Page Rank of pages. This is really an important update from Google and perhaps, we are the first on web to break the news.

Samsung Galaxy Skin – The Future of Android Phones [Concept]

Samsung Galaxy Skin – The Future of Android Phones [Concept]: "
This image has no alt text

As much as I wanted to title this post “BREAKING: Leaked Pics of the Samsung Galaxy S 3″ I refrained myself. Either way, this is still pretty impressive. Normally, I’m completely against concept phones. I think they’re silly. Yes, they always look sexy, but in the end will do nothing but give you tech-balls (no need to explain). The reason I’m posting this concept phone in particular is because there has been a lot of technical advancements in terms of flexible AMOLED displays and flexible lithium ion batteries these past few months. So, while we’re still probably around 10 or 20 years away from actually making a phone like this possible — I mean, c’mon. It’s pretty damn cool. Just grab a towel and drool over these pics for the next 5 minutes.
